School
Support
This section includes 2 separate, but complementary intervention options:

2.1 School support:
The school support offered includes both teacher and home guidance.

If you are experiencing unexplainable or unmanageable challenges with school drop-offs, general school avoidance, challenging moments for your child during the school day or even after school challenges, such as homework avoidance, there is hope.

At the onset of this support journey, I will first meet with you as parents to hear all your concerns. From there we decide on the next steps of action.
A ‘blind observation’ is normally the most effective next step as it provides key information to help formulate the intervention plan to support you, your child, and where necessary, the teacher. The observation consists of a pre-arranged visit your child's school environment (without their knowledge, but with school consent). It is also valuable to meet with their teacher/s and if necessary, any other adults involved in their environment/s, such as afterschool teachers or sport coaches.
If necessary, post school observation, I do a home visit to observe the morning routines and drop-off procedure, or the highlighted challenging time - e.g. pick-up time, homework, etc. This is all done without judgement and no one needs to perform during this time.

From there we work together to discover the next step in the journey, and if necessary, discuss and make referrals to outside professionals, who will further assist in the specific areas noted by you as a family, the relevant teachers and observed by myself during my visits to home and school. For example, an Educational Psychologist, Occupational Therapist or Nutritionist.
Often times this next step includes, but is not limited to, parent or teacher guidance, home or school structure alterations, routine adjustments, individual sessions with your child in order to equip them with the necessary skills needed to navigate their day – these sessions can take place within the home environment or their school environment.

Please take extra note: I do not bring a stance of judgement into any of the environments I am permitted to enter. My heart is to understand the natural environments of all individuals involved before making any suggestions. I believe that seeing the fuller context of a situation brings about a more accurate intervention plan, as well as matching a family with like-minded professionals, which is key to lasting progress.

2.2 Specialised Individual Tutoring
Tailored tutoring sessions in a comfortable atmosphere where learning becomes fun, while addressing challenges and stressors surrounding school.

These sessions include, but are not limited to, putting school into context, assistance with homework or specific concepts, organising schoolwork, exploring and implementing suitable study methods, and studying for tests and exams.

Site options: At home or at school (dependent on school's policy) and if necessary, online.

If session is at home – we will spend time organising a suitable study area.
If session is at school or via Zoom, these concepts will be discussed, noted and plans shared with parents to assist with implementation thereof.

Sowing seeds of confidence and encouraging students to take responsibility for their education is an imperative part of the process.

During our sessions, I allow for time to connect with your child to ensure that their wellness needs are being fulfilled. Any concerns will be communicated to you as parents and a plan put in place to best support your child.

My educational experience lies in the CAPS and Cambridge curriculums for both primary and high school levels. Many years of experience & continuous training has shaped the methods implemented, which allow me to assist with most grades and subjects in either English or Afrikaans, as well as supporting a variety of learning challenges.

During the first session, my priority is getting to know your child. We do not usually get to the schoolbooks in this session, but this part of the process is an integral part of the journey. However, your child will need to have the textbook/s of the subject/s which they would like to focus on, as well as any homework and a schedule of their weekly afternoon activities.

There may be a request to purchase certain materials to aid the chosen study method and organisational steps – this may include subject bags, lever arch files, plastic sleeves and dividers etc. Should additional materials be required, the list will be discussed and agreed upon with you as parents. The materials will be used during the session and at home. Please note, the suggested materials need not be new and if you have supplies at home, we will happily use that - my suggestions will always take budgets into account.
